Is this some kind of cruel joke asked a mosquito buzzing near the Golden Mount. It tried to land on the glistening surface of the chedi, only to be buffeted away by a strong gust of wind. This Golden Mount may be a famous landmark in Bangkok, but for a tiny creature like me, it’s a formidable challenge. The Golden Mount, formally known as Wat Saket, is not really a mountain. It’s an 80-meter-tall artificial hill, crowned with a gleaming golden chedi. This chedi holds a relic of the Buddha, brought all the way from Sri Lanka. Climbing the 300 steps to the top is a pilgrimage of sorts. It’s a journey that tests your endurance, especially under the scorching Thai sun. But the panoramic views of Bangkok from the summit make it all worthwhile. The panoramic view is breathtaking. You can see the bustling streets of Bangkok sprawled out beneath you. You feel a sense of peace and tranquility here, high above the chaos of the city. You can almost feel the weight of history here at the Golden Mount. It’s a place that has witnessed both tragedy and triumph. During a devastating cholera outbreak in the 19th century, Wat Saket became a cremation ground. Thousands of bodies were brought here, a grim reminder of the city’s vulnerability. Today, the Golden Mount stands as a symbol of resilience and hope. It’s a place where people come to pay their respects, make merit, and find solace in the teachings of the Buddha. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the beauty and serenity of this sacred site. Let the tranquility of the Golden Mount wash over you, and leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.
