Imagine the peacefulness of a lush, 12-hectare park after a stroll along the riverbank section of the Kedayan River. This is Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, better known as Golden Jubilee Crown Park to many and a riverfront park that opened in 2017 to celebrate Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s Golden Jubilee. The idea for this park stems from a broader plan to revitalize the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, and a particular area in the city center. The park’s predecessor, the Eko-Koridor Park, served as the focal point for the Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor project, designed to improve flood management and rehabilitate the environment. The park, which is part of the broader Bandar Seri Begawan Development Master Plan, revitalized the area in the heart of the capital by constructing new commercial, residential, and social infrastructures.
The park’s construction began in January 2016 and was originally slated to be completed in May 2018. This, however, did not happen because the construction work finished 8 months ahead of schedule. This is a huge achievement, a testament to the work ethic and dedication of those involved in the project. The park features wide promenades for pedestrians and cyclists, green spaces for recreation, and gardens. The park is easily accessible; there are eleven access points: nine from the land and two from the river. Visitors can also choose to cross Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Pedestrian Bridge, which connects the park to Batu Satu.
The park offers a moment of respite amidst the cityscape and provides locals and tourists with a beautiful place to rest and unwind after a long day of exploring. It also is a testament to the commitment of the government to building a more sustainable future for Bandar Seri Begawan, embracing the natural backdrop and environment of the place.
