“A temple made of gold that nobles visit” whispered a fellow traveler, his voice hushed with awe. That’s how captivating the Golden Hall is. Its official name might be Rokuon-ji, but its splendor earned it the nickname Golden Hall. This three-story marvel, bathed in gold leaf, stands as one of the most iconic symbols of Kyoto.

The Golden Hall’s history dates back to 1397, a time when Kyoto echoed with the footsteps of shoguns and emperors. The third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, envisioned this site as his haven, a retreat from the world’s clamor. He named it Kitayama-dono. Upon his death in 1408, his wish transformed it from a luxurious retreat into a serene Zen temple.

Each floor of the Golden Hall is a testament to a distinct architectural style prevalent in those times. The first floor embodies the Shinden style, reflecting the elegance of the Heian period’s palaces. Natural wood pillars stand in stark contrast, yet in harmony, with the gleaming gold above. The second floor, clad entirely in gold leaf, speaks of the Bukke style, reminiscent of the samurai residences where strength met refined aesthetics. Within those golden walls, a seated Kannon Bodhisattva, the embodiment of compassion, is surrounded by the guardians – the Four Heavenly Kings. Finally, the third floor, the pinnacle, stands as a testament to Chinese Zen Hall architecture. It’s a space where the spiritual realm is reflected in every detail, culminating in a golden phoenix that crowns the structure.
