Breathe deep. Here at Golden Gate Park, a story unfolds. This isn’t San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Park. This Golden Gate Park is in Detroit. It’s a tale of ambition, dreams dashed, and a fleeting glimpse of what could have been.

Golden Gate Park started with Albert Jacobs around 1906. He supposedly had a million-dollar budget. Imagine that. A million dollars back then to create a resort. This ambitious project wasn’t the first attempt to transform Fighting Island. The island is now known as Golden Gate Park.

Back in the early 1890s, William and Edward Gillman and Howard Barnes tried their luck. They built a large hotel. It had a billiard hall and bowling alley. Of course, there was a drinking establishment. Sadly, their venture failed. Boat service was unreliable. Patrons sometimes couldn’t get home until 3 or 4 in the morning. Operations ceased around 1895. The property then went to Francis Palms.

Fast forward to 1906. Mr. Jacobs, a resident of Chatham, Ontario, leased the land. He wanted to start his own resort. He planned to rename the island Palms Island. Maybe this was to erase the past stigma. Renovations began on the old hotel and casino in May or June 1906. The power plant was repaired and enlarged to supply electricity.

A new dance hall was built. It measured nearly 700 square meters. The amusement area would occupy the northern end of the island around the hotel. The southern end would be for bicycles and automobiles. A regular ferry service was planned.

Sadly, no additional information has surfaced on Golden Gate Park. It too failed. A newspaper article from July 1909 mentioned Edward Britton of Pittsburg. He wanted to revive the area. He had rented land around the hotel. He applied for a liquor permit. He said the area hadn’t been run properly. He planned to expand the operation. Nothing further has been found about what happened. Research continues.

Golden Gate Park is a reminder of fleeting dreams. It’s a testament to the challenges of turning ambition into reality. The island still holds secrets. Perhaps one day more will be revealed about this park. It could have been a grand resort. Now it is just a memory fading away.
