Built in 1885 Gold Creek Dam stands as a testament to Brisbane’s ingenuity. It wasn’t just any dam. Gold Creek Dam was a vital addition to Brisbane’s water supply. Enoggera Dam alone couldn’t meet the city’s growing thirst. Gold Creek Dam provided an extra source. Its higher elevation allowed it to supply water to the city’s highest points. This was a crucial advantage.

The construction of Gold Creek Dam wasn’t easy. It faced unexpected challenges. Cost overruns and delays led to criticism. Despite these difficulties the dam was completed. A single 16-inch cast-iron pipe 20 kilometers long connected the dam to Brisbane. This was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time.

Gold Creek Dam’s spillway is truly unique. Originally an unlined chute it was damaged in floods around 1890. It was replaced with an un-reinforced concrete stepped spillway. This was a world first. It paved the way for modern roller-compacted concrete stepped spillways. Much of the original 1890 spillway is still in use today. That’s impressive.

There were also early concerns about water quality. Complaints about taste and smell were common. Solutions like aeration and sedimentation were suggested. Later filtration was also recommended. These issues highlight the ongoing challenges of water management.

Today Gold Creek Dam is a popular spot. A walking track circles the reservoir. It’s perfect for runners walkers and mountain bikers. However on-water activities are forbidden. This is a place where you can enjoy nature. The dam’s history and innovative spillway system make it truly special. Gold Creek Dam is more than just a dam. It’s a piece of Brisbane’s history. A reminder of the city’s resilience.
