Did Goethe truly rest here at Goetheruh? That’s a question whispered on the wind as we stand on this rise. Located north of the majestic Goetheturm, Goetheruh offers a peaceful view of Frankfurt. Two small hills rise here within the city forest. Goetheruh is the larger of these hidden gems. While its name suggests a connection to the famous poet, no historical evidence confirms whether Goethe actually sought solace in this spot. But there are poems that describe this area, right at the edge of the forest by the old Landwehr, as one of Goethe’s favorite places. Now though, a modern touch graces Goetheruh. Created in 1999, a sandstone column sits upon the hill, a quiet counterpoint to the bustling Goetheturm. This isn’t just any column. It’s a piece of art, designed by Scottish landscape artist Ian Hamilton Finlay. The column bears a modified quote from Goethe’s “Faust II”: “Arcadia, a kingdom in Sparta’s neighborhood.” It also serves as a resting place, a bench inviting contemplation of the city spread before you. Interestingly, the artist intended for the column to appear as though it had “always been here in the forest.” Goetheruh is more than just a viewpoint. It’s a blend of history, art, and nature, offering a tranquil escape just steps away from the iconic Goetheturm.
