Goethe Statue

Amidst the vibrant foliage of Philadelphia’s Horticulture Center grounds stands a tribute to literary genius, the Goethe Statue. This bronze figure, erected in 1890, captures the essence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a towering figure in German literature. The Goethe Statue isn’t merely a static sculpture. Commissioned by the Canstatter Volksfest-Verein, a local German-American organization, the Goethe Statue serves as a companion piece to another artistic gem, the Schiller Statue. Both statues grace the Horticulture Center grounds, honoring two of Germany’s most celebrated literary figures. These great men of letters, Goethe and Schiller, shared not only a passion for language but also a deep friendship and frequent collaboration. The artist behind both the Goethe Statue and the Schiller Statue, Heinrich Carl Johan Manger, honed his skills largely through self-teaching, though he did receive some formal training at the Dresden Academy in Germany. Goethe’s legacy extends far beyond his literary achievements. He was a polymath who excelled in drama, theology, and even science. His magnum opus, the dramatic tragedy Faust, was published in its entirety after his death in 1832, cementing his place as a literary giant.
