What if I told you this bridge was once considered a marvel of engineering? The Goethals Bridge stands before us. It is not just a crossing. It is a testament to vision and progress.

The Goethals Bridge is a pair of cable-stayed bridge spans. They connect Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Staten Island, New York. These spans gracefully cross the Arthur Kill. They replaced a cantilever bridge built in 1928. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates this vital link.

Let’s step back in time. The early 20th century saw factories boom along the Arthur Kill. Staten Island became part of New York City. The ferry system strained under the weight of freight and commuters. Connecting Staten Island to New Jersey became essential. Plans for a tunnel or low-level bridge emerged. The Port of New York Authority was formed. It developed plans for high-level bridges. The Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing were born.

The original Goethals Bridge was designed by John Alexander Low Waddell. He also designed the Outerbridge Crossing. Waddell was a famous bridge engineer. He was known for his engineering texts. He also pioneered the modern vertical lift bridge.

The Goethals Bridge got its name from Major General George Washington Goethals. He supervised the Panama Canal’s construction. He was also the Port Authority’s first consulting engineer. Interestingly, Goethals passed away shortly before the bridge’s dedication in 1928.

Imagine the bridge’s original design. It had a 672-foot-long central span. The bridge was 7,109 feet long and 62 feet wide. It provided a vertical clearance of 135 feet. This allowed ships to pass through the Arthur Kill. The original design included four lanes for vehicles. There was also a walkway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Over the years, the Goethals Bridge saw changes. Concrete medians and parapets were added. These improved safety. A new toll plaza and administration building appeared on Staten Island in 1964. The pedestrian walkways were closed due to condition issues.

In 2017, a new era began. The eastbound span of the new Goethals Bridge opened on June 10. The original span closed. The old cantilever span was dismantled in January 2018. The new westbound span opened on May 21, 2018.

The new Goethals Bridge boasts modern features. These include additional traffic lanes and high-speed E-ZPass lanes. Interstate 278 was reconstructed and widened. The bike path and pedestrian walkway finally opened on March 4, 2020.

Today, the Goethals Bridge stands as a vital transportation artery. It is a symbol of progress. It links communities and economies. As you cross this bridge, remember its history. Remember the visionaries who made it possible.
