Imagine standing where Germanic tribes once worshipped Wotan. That is the foundation of the Godesburg. It towers over Bad Godesberg. This castle gave the district its name. For 800 years, the Godesburg has watched over this area.

Let’s delve into the Godesburg’s past. Archbishop Dietrich of Cologne started building it in 1210. He wanted to control Cologne’s southern border. The Godesburg became a favorite spot for Cologne’s Electors during the Middle Ages.

But the Godesburg’s story has darker chapters. In 1583, Bavarian troops blew it up during the Cologne War. This happened after Archbishop Truchsess zu Waldburg became Protestant. The Pope then excommunicated him. Only the castle keep remained.

Centuries later, in 1959, architect Gottfried Böhm planned to rebuild it. His design included a hotel and a restaurant.

Have you noticed the restaurant near the Godesburg? It attracts many visitors. People enjoy exquisite meals there. They can forget the hectic pace of daily life while enjoying the most beautiful view in the area.

From the Godesburg, the views are incredible. You can see Bad Godesberg. The Siebengebirge hills stretch out before you. The Rhine valley unfolds in all its glory.

Take a moment to appreciate the terraced castle cemetery. Graves of well-known people are located here. The Godesburg is not just a ruin. It is a place of history, faith, and remembrance.

Bad Godesberg itself has an interesting story. It became a spa resort in 1792. In 1925, it officially became “Bad” Godesberg. This recognized its status as a spa town. In 1935, Bad Godesberg became a town.

Pause to think about 1938. Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler here. They discussed the Sudetenland crisis at the Rheinhotel Dreesen. Hitler’s demands were expressed in the Godesberg Memorandum.

During 1944 and 1945, a Nazi forced labor camp was located in Bad Godesberg. On March 8, 1945, Bad Godesberg was the first major German urban district to be transferred to Allied forces control without a battle.

After the war, Bonn became the capital of West Germany. Many foreign embassies were located in Bad Godesberg. Some buildings are still used as consulates. In 1969, Godesberg was incorporated into Bonn. Since then, it has been called the “posh part of Bonn”.

Before we move on let me mention that Bad Godesberg is twinned with several cities. These include Saint-Cloud in France, Frascati in Italy. Also Windsor and Maidenhead in England and Kortrijk in Belgium.

The Godesburg and Bad Godesberg have seen centuries of change. From ancient worship to modern diplomacy, its story continues to evolve. As you explore, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. Each stone whispers tales of faith, conflict, and renewal.
