Hear the bells of Gnadenkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz. Their resonant tones echo across Hannover-Mittelfeld. They tell a story of resilience hope and faith. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to the spirit of those who rebuilt their lives after the devastation of World War II.

Gnadenkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz stands proudly at Lehrter Platz. It’s a beacon of hope for the community it serves. Its origins lie in the post-war era. Many displaced people found refuge in Mittelfeld. Among them were Catholics and Evangelicals. The Evangelical community flourished. They initially met in a small shop on Ahornstrasse. Today a police station stands there.

The community’s growth demanded a larger space. In 1951 a kindergarten and a staff house with a church hall were built. A pivotal moment arrived with the appointment of Pastor Christian Vasterling in 1953. He guided the community to independence from the Matthäi-Kirchengemeinde in Wülfel in 1955.

The existing facilities proved inadequate. In 1959 the foundation stone for a new church and community center was laid. On December 16 1962 Landesbischof Hanns Lilje consecrated the Gnadenkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz. The church’s name honours the Gnadenkirchen of Silesia. There was even a long-standing partnership with the Evangelical community in Militsch. Its Gnadenkirche inspired the name.

Step inside Gnadenkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz. The low entrance hall houses the baptismal font. The tower chapel offers a space for quiet prayer. A book records the names of congregation members buried far away. Six glass paintings of old Silesian Gnadenkirchen adorn one wall. One of these depicts the church’s namesake.

The main church is spacious. Fourteen stations of the cross line the side walls. Twelve candles representing the apostles stand on pillars. Simple windows symbolize the twelve gates of heavenly Jerusalem. Two angel windows add a touch of ethereal beauty. Under the triumphal cross countless eyes seem to gaze upon the congregation.

The altar area features a large window titled “The Cloud of Witnesses”. It represents those who walked the path of faith before us. A colourful round window with a depiction of Christ is on the east wall. A round window with a red rosette graces the west gable.

The church’s organ built in 1965 by Alfred Führer boasts 28 registers. Its mechanical action and electrical stops create harmonious sounds. The seven bells cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in 1962 are tuned to the “Te Deum”. Each bell has a name a weight and an inscription. They toll for different occasions from Sundays to funerals and weddings. The bells harmonize with those of neighbouring churches. Only on major holidays do all seven ring together.

Gnadenkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. A place of worship and a symbol of hope built from the ashes of the past. The next time you hear its bells remember the stories they tell.
