He’s smiling isn’t he? That’s the Glückslicher Bergmann statue. Right before you stands a symbol of Freiberg’s rich mining history. He’s not just a miner. This isn’t some generic figure. This is a Knappschaftsältester.

The Glückslicher Bergmann represents more than just the hard work of mining. He represents the social structure of the mines. These foremen held vital roles. They protected the interests of the miners. They ensured the miners’ social security. They were the voice of the workforce. This statue placed on Schüppchenberg underscores the very beginning of Freiberg. Legend says the first significant silver discovery happened here in 1168. That discovery laid the foundation for Freiberg’s rise as a city.

Sculptor Friedhelm Schelter didn’t want to portray just a happy miner. He wanted to capture thoughtfulness. He aimed for a feeling of contentment. The Glückslicher Bergmann shows responsibility. He shoulders the weight of his duties. He’s accountable for the entire mining community. His outfit reflects his position. It hints at his pride in his work.

The Glückslicher Bergmann’s creation wasn’t easy. The sculptor Friedhelm Schelter spent months crafting a life-size plaster model. He learned to weld to create the iron framework. He used Styrofoam for shaping. He then applied layer upon layer of plaster bandages. He painstakingly detailed the surface with spatulas rasps and sandpaper. He even had expert advice from Professor Uli Eiẞner and curator Dieter Höfer. Their inspections confirmed the accuracy of his work. The final casting into nickel silver was a complex process. The plaster model had to be cut into sections. Each piece was meticulously recreated in wax. This wax was then embedded in plaster and chamotte. The wax was melted out. Molten nickel silver filled the resulting cavity. The separate pieces were welded together. Internal bracing reinforced the structure. This resulted in a magnificent statue weighing approximately 350 kilograms.

The statue’s patina gives it the appearance of age. It accentuates the texture of the sculpting. A clear coat protects it from the elements. The Glückslicher Bergmann is a testament to the dedication and artistry involved in this ambitious project. The Silberweg project which showcases eleven larger-than-life silver figures throughout Freiberg’s medieval old town celebrates the city’s mining and urban history. It offers a fascinating stroll through the city. The Glückslicher Bergmann proudly stands as one of its most compelling figures. The statue’s placement is significant. This spot is where history was made. It is where Freiberg’s fortune began. Look closely at the Glückslicher Bergmann. His very presence conveys the blend of responsibility contentment and pride that defined Freiberg’s miners. He is more than a statue. He’s a story. He’s Freiberg.
