“Glorious Dead” whispers the sandstone. We stand before the Cenotaph a poignant memorial on Kolkata’s Maidan. This isn’t just any monument. It’s a silent tribute to Calcutta’s British and Anglo-Indian soldiers. They gave their lives during the First World War 1914-1918.

The Glorious Dead Cenotaph designed by Herbert William Palliser resembles London’s Whitehall Cenotaph. Its simple design speaks volumes. The inscription “Glorious Dead” etched on the eastern side is stark. MCMXIV and MCMXVIII on the southern and northern sides mark the war’s beginning and end. These Roman numerals silently record a devastating conflict.

Originally the Cenotaph held brass plaques. These plaques listed the names of the fallen. In 1959 these plaques were moved. They now reside in St John’s Church. The names on the plaques were exclusively British. This shows the Cenotaph was dedicated to British and Anglo-Indian soldiers only.

Two bronze statues guard the Cenotaph. These statues are British soldiers. Their heads are bowed. Their rifles are reversed a traditional funeral pose. These statues cast in London are silent sentinels. They stand watch over the memories of those lost. The sculptor Herbert William Palliser’s name is barely visible on the pedestal.

The Cenotaph stands enclosed by a low railing. A Remembrance Service is held annually. This service takes place on the Sunday nearest to November 11th. It honors all Commonwealth servicemen and women who died in both World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The Glorious Dead Cenotaph may lack ornate detail. Its simplicity however enhances its power. It is a moving tribute. It stands as a testament to sacrifice. It reminds us of the human cost of war. This quiet monument speaks volumes in Kolkata’s bustling heart. Let us take a moment to remember those who fell. Let their sacrifice not be forgotten.
