Four turrets rise majestically. They seem to penetrate the sky above Gloria Church in Mumbai. We stand before one of Mumbai’s oldest Roman Catholic churches. It is named Nossa Senhora de Gloria in Portuguese. The Gloria Church’s story began in 1632.
Portuguese Franciscans built the original church. They constructed it at the foot of Mazagaon hill. The De Souza e Lima family funded it. They owned Mazagaon Island. The King of Portugal gave them the island in 1572.
That original Gloria Church was demolished in 1911. The present Gloria Church opened in 1913. It stands in Byculla.
The modern Gloria Church has a distinct style. It was built in English Gothic Revival style. Its shape resembles a Latin Cross. The Gloria Church’s tall towers dominate the skyline. The four turrets reach 160 feet.
Gloria Church isn’t just a religious site. It is also a cultural landmark. Its beauty has drawn filmmakers. Manmohan Desai filmed “Amar Akbar Anthony” here. The film was released in 1977.
In 2019, Gloria Church received recognition. Its restoration project won an Award of Merit. UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards gave the award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
Adjacent to Gloria Church is a school. The Antonio D’Souza High School is managed by missionaries. They are attached to Gloria Church.
