High above Marienwerder rises the Glockenberg. It is a wooded inland dune with a fascinating story. The Glockenberg’s peak reaches 60 meters above sea level.

Let’s explore its geographical location. The Glockenberg sits almost in the center of Marienwerder. The landscape transitions north toward the Mittelland Canal and its Nordhafen-West port. The Roßbruchgraben flows between them. It runs west to east, north of the dune. This connects to the Leine River. The river passes the elevation southeast to south. The B6 federal road heads out of Hanover. About 1 km east-northeast of the dune, the K21 branches off. It is also known as Garbsener Landstraße. It leads through Marienwerder and Havelse.

The Glockenberg is part of the Weser-Aller Plain. Specifically, it’s in the Hannoversche Moorgeest. More precisely, the Engelbosteler Moorgeest. South of here is the Neustadt-Stöckener Leinetal.

Parts of the Glockenberg are in the Mittlere Leine landscape protection area. This area spans 41 square kilometers. To the southeast, near the Leine, lies the Aller fauna-flora-habitat area.

Like the old Jewish cemetery on Oberstraße, the Glockenberg rises almost 10 meters. It stands above the Leine’s flat area. This sandy elevation offers unique views.

As part of the Hinübersche Garten landscape park, an obelisk was erected on the dune. It stands about 15 meters tall. This landmark historically provided a point de vue. It was an extension of the path to Marienwerder Monastery.

The Marienwerder cemetery sits between the dune’s peak and Garbsener Landstraße.

Near the Glockenberg and the Marienwerder cemetery is a somber reminder. It is the bunker of the Lagerkommandant. This bunker belonged to the KZ Hannover-Stöcken. A memorial stands on Garbsener Landstraße. It commemorates the 1,500 prisoners and forced laborers. Hans-Jürgen Breuste created it.

The Glockenberg offers a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. It serves as a reminder of Hanover’s layered past. It’s a place where nature and history intertwine.
