Here at the Glinder Kupfermühle, can you hear the echoes of a bygone era? This isn’t just a building. It’s a portal into Glinde’s rich industrial past.

The Glinder Kupfermühle’s story began long ago. Documents mention a mill here as early as 1229. Imagine the water wheel turning relentlessly. It was a vital part of the community.

Initially, it served as a grain mill. Then, in 1648, it transformed into a fell mill. It was used by Hamburg’s tanners. The water powered the leather softening process.

In 1679, a merchant from Hamburg converted it into the Glinder Kupfermühle. Copper mills were not unusual in Stormarn. They existed as early as the 15th century.

The Glinder Kupfermühle faced economic hardship during Napoleon’s reign. Copper had to be imported. This made production difficult.

After two centuries as a copper mill, its purpose shifted again. In 1864, it became a wood dye mill. Steam and water powered the machinery.

Two years later, it reverted to a grain mill. In 1874, E.H. Hintze acquired the mill. He ushered in an era of prosperity. Hintze cultivated the land. He also bred fish and rebuilt the bridge. He even added a bakery.

By 1887, a turbine replaced the water wheel. It could grind an impressive 12,000 kg of grain.

Milling operations ceased in 1979. The Glinder Kupfermühle is now a protected monument. It stands as a museum of local history and a cultural site.

The city of Glinde renovated the mill from 1982 to 1985. The local association managed the renovation. Since 1985, it has served as a museum.

In the early 1990s, a car shed was constructed on the Mühlenwiese. It houses the agricultural history department. In 2004, an extension opened on the first floor. It featured the exhibit “Living in the 50s”.

A second car shed was built between 1999 and 2002. A historic clay oven sits between the sheds. It is still functional.

In 2011 and 2012, a third exhibition building was added. It completes the copper mill ensemble. The ground floor showcases Glinde’s history. Carriages and milk carts depict rural life. The upper floor focuses on crafts. A historic hair salon and a cobbler’s workshop are on display.

The Glinder Kupfermühle stands as a reminder of Glinde’s evolution. It is more than just a mill. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its people. It’s a place where the past comes alive.
