Overlooking the serene valley of Glencree lies a place of quiet contemplation, the Glencree German War Cemetery. The Glencree German War Cemetery isn’t a typical war cemetery. It holds a unique place in Irish history, a testament to reconciliation and remembrance. Officially dedicated on July 9, 1961, the Glencree German War Cemetery houses 134 graves. These graves hold the remains of German soldiers and civilians who died on Irish soil during both World Wars. The majority of those interred were Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine personnel, some identified, others unknown. Six graves belong to German prisoners of war from the First World War, held in British camps in Ireland. A further 46 individuals met their fate when the SS Arandora Star was torpedoed off the coast of Donegal. This ship was carrying German civilian detainees from Britain to Canada for internment. Among the interred is Dr. Hermann Görtz, an Abwehr spy who liaised with the IRA. He took his own life after the war, fearing deportation and handover to the Soviet Union. The cemetery at Glencree is administered by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge). It’s a place of quiet beauty, a stark contrast to the conflicts that led these individuals to their final resting place in Glencree. The Glencree German War Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war, a place of respect and reflection amidst the tranquil beauty of the Wicklow Mountains.
