“Imagine tracks curving like lenses focusing light” a visitor exclaims as we approach the Gleislinse Installation. The Gleislinse Installation stands as a testament to Berlin’s innovative spirit. It showcases the city’s commitment to progress. This project transformed a former railway area into a vibrant commercial hub.

The Gleislinse Installation area, once part of the Schöneweide railway yard, lay fallow for years. But Berlin saw potential. The city envisioned a space where industry, technology, and nature could coexist. Thus, the Gleislinse Installation project began.

In 2016, the Senate approved plans for the Adlershofer Gleislinse Installation. This decision marked a turning point. It paved the way for the development of 45 hectares. This vast area sits between the S-Bahn station Rangierbahnhof Schöneweide and the S-Bahn station Adlershof.

The Gleislinse Installation’s location is strategically important. It bridges the Johannisthal/Adlershof development zone and Adlershof’s center. This connection fosters growth and collaboration. It creates a seamless transition between established and emerging areas.

The development of the Gleislinse Installation aimed to attract manufacturing industries, offices, and service providers. This would create new opportunities and stimulate the local economy. The project also focused on improving infrastructure. New roads and public spaces were created to enhance accessibility. The S-Bahn station Betriebsbahnhof Schöneweide was opened on the Gleislinse Installation side. It provides convenient access for commuters and visitors. The station was renamed Johannisthal in 2020.

A key feature of the Gleislinse Installation is the Gustav-Hertz-Platz. This square serves as an entrance to the area. It offers a welcoming space for people to gather and connect. A pedestrian and bicycle bridge extends the Ostfuge. This provides a link to the Köllnische Heide Adlershof. A green corridor runs parallel to the S-Bahn tracks. It connects to the public road network and the Johannisthal landscape park.

The Gleislinse Installation project also preserved historical elements. The Lokschuppen and Wasserturm, landmark buildings of the former Rangierbahnhof Schöneweide, were protected. These structures stand as reminders of the area’s industrial past. They add character and charm to the modern development.

Ecological considerations were also a priority. Measures were taken to protect local wildlife. Habitats were created for the Zauneidechsen. This ensured the preservation of biodiversity. The Gleislinse Installation demonstrates that development and environmental protection can go hand in hand.

Today, the Gleislinse Installation stands as a thriving commercial area. It exemplifies Berlin’s ability to transform underutilized spaces into vibrant hubs of activity. As we stand here, it’s easy to see the area as more than just a business location. It is a symbol of Berlin’s future. A future where innovation, sustainability, and community converge.
