How about a church born from the union of many. Let’s step inside the story of Glebe Road Uniting Church. This church stands as a testament to unity and faith in the Ipswich community.
Glebe Road Uniting Church’s story is one of coming together. Several congregations united to create this vibrant church. In 1977, the Uniting Church in Australia formed. This union brought together diverse churches in the Ipswich area. Seven Methodist congregations joined. Also one Presbyterian, one Congregational, and one Co-operative church joined. They all formed the East Ipswich parish.
Among these uniting churches was St John’s Presbyterian Church at Booval. It stood on the grounds where Glebe Road Uniting Church would later be built. The vision was to create a central place of worship. This place would serve the needs of the newly formed parish.
Rev Trevor Foote reminisces about the church’s origins. He recalls the inauguration service held in 1977. The service took place at Trinity North Booval. A combined choir performed the gospel musical Spirit. The congregation was overflowing with joy.
The early days of the Ipswich East Uniting Churches focused on spiritual growth. Adult Christian Education played a key role. Hundreds of lay people completed the Bethel Bible Series. This training equipped them for various ministries. They became lay preachers, worship leaders, and Sunday School teachers.
As the parish grew, changes occurred. Rev Dr Norma Spear succeeded Rev Foote in 1981. She continued expanding adult training. Eventually, the large parish split into smaller ones. Some church buildings were sold. Some congregations combined. Today, there is one congregation at North Booval. Another is at Glebe Road. And a third is at St Ives, Goodna.
The sale of the Silkstone and Newtown church buildings made a new complex possible. This complex would be built on Glebe Road. It would stand on the grounds of the old St John’s Presbyterian Church. This new church would house the former Silkstone, Newtown, and St John’s congregations.
Glebe Road Uniting Church hosts three services each Sunday. These services cater to different worship styles. Several cell groups operate within the church. This provides a variety of opportunities for people to connect.
In 1987, the Glebe Road Uniting Church complex was completed. A plaque commemorates this milestone. It reads that the congregation committed to building the complex to the Glory of God. The completed church and hall were dedicated on September 6th, 1987.
