Whispers of a forgotten past linger here at Glasmore Abbey. Imagine the bustling life within these walls centuries ago. Glasmore Abbey founded in 660 AD by St Cronan Mochua flourished under his rule. It was a place of learning and faith a beacon in the Irish landscape. But its prosperity attracted unwanted attention. Danish pirates from Malahide harbour targeted its wealth. On a dark February night they attacked. They plundered the abbey. They killed St Cronan and his monks.

This square structure before you is what remains. Thick walls enclose a space approximately 10 meters on each side. You can see windows in each wall a doorway on the north side. The abbey’s story is a tragic one a testament to the fragility of even the most thriving communities. Some sources suggest that this might not be the original site of Glasmore Abbey. There is some confusion regarding its precise location. The nearby well associated with St Cronan further adds to the mystery. The surviving stonework suggests a late medieval date possibly not the original abbey. Still despite the uncertainty the ruins stand as a powerful reminder of a once-important place.

The site’s history blends fact and mystery. While the details may be debated the essence remains. Glasmore Abbey was a significant abbey. It was tragically destroyed by Viking raiders. It stands as a silent witness to the turbulent past of Ireland. Its quiet strength continues to echo through time. Perhaps you hear those whispers too. Let’s move on to our next destination.
