It connected Sydney to the developing northern suburbs. However by the 1950s it was hopelessly inadequate. Peak hour traffic was a nightmare. A new bridge was desperately needed.
The design of the new Gladesville Bridge was a bold undertaking. The English firm Guy Maunsell & Partners proposed a revolutionary design a pre-stressed concrete arch. This was a daring choice. It was a departure from the more conventional steel truss designs favored at the time. The chosen design was not only visually striking but it was also incredibly strong and economical.
A young engineer Anthony Gee played a crucial role. At just 22 years old he was tasked with developing the design. He even wrote the computer programs used in its analysis and construction. This was a pioneering use of computers in bridge building. The design was reviewed by the renowned engineer Eugene Freyssinet. He was a pioneer in pre-stressed concrete. The construction itself was an engineering marvel. Huge precast concrete blocks were hoisted into place. Inflatable rubber gaskets were used to lift and join the arch sections together. Gladesville Bridge when completed was the longest single span concrete arch bridge ever constructed. This was a world record that held for about 20 years. Its length is 579.4 meters its central arch spanning an impressive 305 meters. The bridge originally had six lanes. It was later widened to eight. Pedestrians can also use the bridge. They have walkways on both sides. However these pathways are quite narrow.
