“Terrified” doesn’t even begin to describe how the people of Givon felt. We’re standing near where ancient Givon once stood, a Canaanite town facing an impossible decision. The story of Givon Camp is a tale of fear, deception, and an unlikely alliance that shaped the history of Israel.

After the Israelite victories at Jericho and Ai, word spread like wildfire. The Canaanite cities knew a powerful force was moving through the land. The people of Givon had a choice: reject their idols or leave. They chose to fight. But Jericho and Ai changed everything.

Knowing they couldn’t win a straight fight, the Givonim devised a clever plan. They wore tattered clothes and carried stale bread. Approaching the Israelite camp, they claimed to be from a faraway land seeking an alliance. The Israelites, failing to consult with the high priest, agreed and made a covenant. They unknowingly violated a Torah prohibition.

The Israelites soon discovered the deception. Some wanted to kill the Givonim, but Joshua intervened. The Givonim explained their fear. They hadn’t realized they could have been spared by abandoning idolatry. Joshua, fearing a desecration of God’s name, upheld the treaty. He allowed the Givonim to live. They became workers in the Holy Temple, renouncing their idols and accepting Israelite rule.

The other Canaanite kings were furious. They saw the Givonim’s actions as betrayal. The kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, and Lachish marched on Givon. They prepared to destroy the city and its people. The Givonim sent a desperate plea to Joshua in Jericho.

Despite the dubious origins of the covenant, Joshua honored it. He rallied his troops and marched overnight to Givon. He launched a surprise attack. The Canaanites panicked and fled towards Beit Horon. Divine intervention followed. Huge stones rained down from the sky crushing the fleeing enemy.

The battle raged on. Joshua, fearing the loss of momentum if night fell, commanded the sun to stand still. The moon remained in the sky above the Valley of Ayalon. The Israelite victory was decisive. The four kings were captured and executed. The war continued for years. Joshua’s actions at Givon secured a foothold in the land and banished idolatry from southern Israel.

So, remember the story of Givon Camp. It’s a reminder that alliances can arise in the most unexpected ways. It underscores the importance of honoring commitments, even those born of deception. And it highlights the role of leadership in navigating complex moral dilemmas during times of conflict.
