How did this unassuming hilltop earn such a poignant name? We are standing at the foot of Givat Hamatos, which translates to “Airplane Hill”. It’s a name etched in tragedy, a somber reminder of the 1967 Six Day War. During that conflict, an Israeli pilot named Dan Givon lost his life when his plane was shot down right here. The hill, forever marked by this event, became a tribute to his sacrifice. But Givat Hamatos holds more than just recent history. Archaeological digs here have revealed remnants of buildings and artifacts dating back to the Second Temple period, a time spanning from 516 BCE to 70 CE. Imagine, centuries-old echoes whispering beneath our feet! After the Six-Day War, this historically rich area sadly remained neglected for nearly 25 years. It was in 1991 that Givat Hamatos served as a temporary home, with 400 caravans set up to accommodate Ethiopian immigrants who were airlifted to Israel during Operation Solomon. Today, Givat Hamatos is experiencing a revival, transforming into a vibrant new neighborhood in central Jerusalem. With plans for thousands of apartments, parks, public buildings, and even hotels, Givat Hamatos is poised to blend its storied past with a dynamic future.
