Remember Giuseppe Pitrè. His name echoes through Sicilian history. He was not just a man but a champion of the people. What if I told you that this statue commemorates a pioneer?

Giuseppe Pitrè was born in Palermo in 1841. He lived until 1916. He wasn’t just a folklorist. He was also a medical doctor, a professor, and a senator for Sicily. This statue honors his extensive contributions.

Pitrè extended the concept of folklore. It included all aspects of popular life. He is a forerunner in medical history too. He volunteered under Garibaldi in 1860. He graduated in medicine in 1866. Then, he dedicated himself to studying literature.

Giuseppe Pitrè conducted the first scientific studies on Italian popular culture. He pioneered Italian ethnographic studies. He established the study of folk psychology in Sicily. He taught at the University of Palermo.

Between 1871 and 1913, Pitrè compiled a vast collection. It was called Biblioteca delle tradizioni popolari siciliane. This translates to “Library of Sicilian popular traditions”. It spanned twenty-five volumes. It was a treasure trove of Sicilian oral culture.

Pitrè’s “Sicilian Fairy Tales, Stories, and Folktales” appeared in 1875. It documented Sicily’s rich folkloric heritage. This heritage derived from both European and Middle Eastern traditions. His work culminated great European folklore scholarship. It began earlier in the 19th century.

Giuseppe Pitrè championed the common people of Sicily. He valued their customs. His scholarship of oral narrative tradition is significant. It is arguably as important as that of the Brothers Grimm.

In 1880, Pitrè co-founded a journal. It was named Archivio per lo studio delle tradizioni popolari. This means “Archive for the Study of Popular Traditions”. He edited it until 1906. In 1894, he published a basic bibliography of Italian popular traditions.

Giuseppe Pitrè became an honorary member. He joined the American Folklore Society in 1890. Palermo honored him. The Museo Antropologico Etnografico Siciliano was founded in his memory.

The Giuseppe Pitrè Ethnographic Museum is in the annex of the Chinese Palace. Pitrè founded it in 1909. He was a folklorist and scholar. He studied folk customs and traditions. The museum holds about 4,000 objects. These include costumes, puppets, and carts. Also, there are nativity scenes and ceramics. Popular religious prints, ex votos, and glass paintings are present. They testify to Sicilian life and culture.

Consider the hall of carriages. You can admire two splendid carriages. They belonged to the Senate of Palermo. The “Restivo room” houses Sicilian carts. Another room is dedicated to ancient nativity scenes.

This statue stands as a testament. It honors Giuseppe Pitrè’s dedication. He preserved Sicily’s cultural heritage. His work continues to inspire. It enriches our understanding of Sicilian identity.
