Deep in the Gelmer region of Muenster, the Gittruper See awaits discovery. This lake is not just a body of water. It’s a hidden gem with a unique story. The Gittruper See is actually a Baggersee. That means it’s a lake formed from an excavation site.

Imagine this. Once, this area was dry land. Then, workers came and dug deep into the earth. Slowly, water filled the void creating the Gittruper See we see today. It is located near Gittrup, close to the border with Greven.

The Gittruper See is not publicly accessible. It is private property owned by the fishing club VFG Fruehauf Muenster. Also, it’s a designated water protection area. This helps to maintain the purity of the water.

The lake’s depth varies. Some spots are shallow only about 1.5 meters deep. Other areas plunge to a maximum depth of 11 meters. The Gittruper See stretches about 300 meters in length and 225 meters in width. This covers approximately 5.5 hectares.

While you can’t swim here, the Gittruper See serves an important ecological purpose. It supports a variety of fish. Anglers come here to test their skills. This ensures the fish population remains healthy.

The Gittruper See is more than just a lake. It’s a testament to how nature and industry can coexist. It’s a reminder that even human-made landscapes can become valuable ecosystems. So next time you are near Gelmer, remember the hidden depths of the Gittruper See.
