“A new giraffe? From Nuremberg?” The Giraffenhaus in Augsburg has seen its share of whispers and excitement. This unassuming building houses a tale as tall as its inhabitants. In 2018, the Giraffenhaus underwent a significant expansion. A spacious 220 square meter annex was added, a testament to the zoo’s dedication to the well-being of its giraffes. This addition ensures the giraffes have ample space to roam, even during the colder months when they might not be able to enjoy the outdoor enclosure. The zoo even welcomed a new resident, Lifty, a Rothschild giraffe from the Nuremberg Zoo. Lifty’s arrival caused a stir. Her journey to Augsburg was a twist of fate, a consequence of a delayed zoo renovation and an unfortunate outbreak of an infectious disease that prevented her from moving abroad. Now settled in Augsburg, Lifty enjoys the company of her fellow giraffes, a testament to the Giraffenhaus’s role in providing a safe haven and a fascinating spectacle for visitors. The Giraffenhaus stands as a symbol of Augsburg Zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
