Did two giraffes always grace Berlin-Buch? No. Let me introduce you to the Giraffe Statue. It’s a dynamic duo sculpted by Stephan Horota between 1967 and 1968. The Giraffe Statue became part of the artistic landscape of the newly built WB I residential area in 1970. This housing development, southwest of Karower Chaussee, is characterized by five-story prefabricated apartment blocks. Originally, the Giraffe Statue stood on a rectangular concrete pedestal near its current location. It was positioned by the row of houses at 171 Karower Straße. After 1990, the area was redesigned. A green space with a pergola and seating area was created in front of the daycare center at 169B Karower Chaussee. The Giraffe Statue was then moved to its current spot on the paved open area. This time, it was placed directly on the pavement without a pedestal. Interestingly, Horota created a second Giraffe Statue around the same time. This twin sculpture resides in the Tierpark Friedrichsfelde in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The two bronze giraffes here in Buch are life-sized and positioned at an angle. They almost touch. Their heads, full of graceful detail, gaze in different directions. This creates a sense of dynamic tension. The Giraffe Statue stands as a testament to the artistic vision integrated into the urban planning of this residential area.
