Did Verrazzano ever imagine his likeness would reside in Battery Park? Here stands the Giovanni Da Verrazzano Statue. It’s a monument to the Italian explorer and his pivotal role in New York City’s history. Giovanni Da Verrazzano wasn’t the first European to reach the Americas. However, his 1524 voyage was the first documented exploration of the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Canada. This included a stop in New York Harbor.

Verrazzano was born near Florence, Italy in 1485. He began his maritime career in France. Commissioned by King Francis I, he searched for a westward passage to Asia. This quest brought him to North America. Verrazzano’s arrival in New York Harbor predated Henry Hudson’s by 85 years. This fact spurred Carlo Barsotti, editor of Il Progresso, to spearhead a campaign. This campaign amongst the Italian-American community funded the statue. Sculptor Ettore Ximenes created the monument. It features a bronze bust of Verrazzano. There is also a female figure representing “Discovery”. She holds a torch and a sword, symbolizing knowledge and the pursuit of truth.

The Giovanni Da Verrazzano Statue was dedicated on October 9, 1909. This coincided with the Hudson-Fulton Celebration. The monument’s placement in Battery Park, overlooking the harbor, aimed to correct a historical oversight. It has faced trials since its dedication. The statue was relocated multiple times. First for the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel construction and later during Battery Park renovations. The original torch was even stolen. Yet, each time, the statue was meticulously restored. This included the return of the torch and the recreation of the original pedestal.

The inscriptions on the pedestal are a testament to Verrazzano’s voyage. They note his 1524 arrival, naming the area “Angoulême.” This was in honor of King Francis I. They pointedly acknowledge Verrazzano as the first European to navigate these waters. These inscriptions represent a fight for historical accuracy. They serve as a reminder of Verrazzano’s significant contribution to New York City’s history. The Giovanni Da Verrazzano Statue offers more than a visual representation of the explorer. It embodies a historical truth. It’s a beacon in Battery Park that proclaims Verrazzano’s important exploration.
