A presidential decree. That’s how Gimpo International Airport officially began. But the story of Gimpo starts long before 1958. Picture this: 1939. The Japanese Imperial Army needed a new airfield. Korean laborers toiled tirelessly. They hauled rocks for miles to build the runways. This was Keijo New Airfield. Gimpo was then just a small town. Its name would become synonymous with this vital airbase.

Gimpo’s role during the Korean War was pivotal. It was a battleground. USAF fighters and bombers engaged in fierce aerial duels. They fought against North Korean aircraft. The airport changed hands several times. Imagine the roar of engines. The sound of explosions. The fear. The courage.

The airfield’s strategic importance is undeniable. It served as a lifeline for the UN forces. The airport also witnessed acts of bravery. In 1953 a North Korean pilot defected. He landed his MiG-15 at Gimpo. This was a significant event. It shifted the balance of power.

After the war Gimpo became Seoul’s main international airport. A new terminal opened in 1971. More followed in 1977 and then 1988. But Gimpo’s capacity was stretched thin. The airport struggled to keep up with demand. There simply wasn’t enough space.

The solution was a new airport. Incheon International Airport was built. It opened in 2001. This marked the end of Gimpo’s reign as the primary airport. Yet it did not end its story. It became Seoul’s secondary airport. Gimpo remains important. It continues to serve millions of passengers each year.

Today Gimpo International Airport is more than just an airport. It’s a cultural complex a leisure hub and a shopping destination. It’s called Sky City. It embodies the history and progress of this dynamic city. Think of Gimpo’s journey. From a wartime airbase to a bustling modern airport. A true testament to resilience and adaptation. Gimpo International Airport continues to thrive. It stands as a powerful symbol. A symbol of Seoul’s growth and enduring spirit. So when you next look out across the airport. Remember the history that lies before you. The history of Gimpo International Airport.
