Ever wondered how a high-class restaurant transformed into a serene temple? That’s the story of Gilsang-sa. This Buddhist temple offers tranquility amid Seoul’s bustling cityscape. Gilsang-sa is a relatively new temple. It was registered in 1995. But its story begins long before its opening.

Once, this site was home to Daewongak. It was a Korean-style restaurant. Politicians and military generals frequented it. Kisaeng, Korean Geisha, entertained them. Back-door politics were common here. Kim Yeong-han owned Daewongak. She was a devout Buddhist. In 1987, she donated her land and restaurant. She gifted it to Monk Pubjeong.

Monk Pubjeong was a Zen master. He decided to transform the restaurant. It would become a place of worship. The transformation was completed and Gilsang-sa opened in 1995.

Gilsang-sa sits on the southern side of Mt. Samgaksan in northern Seoul. Kim Yeong-han’s donation of 100 billion won made it possible. Gilsang-sa is part of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

Entering Gilsang-sa, the Iljumun welcomes all. It is the front gate. Steps lead to Geungnakjeon, the main hall. Inside, you will find the statue of Amitabha Buddha. He is the Buddha of Infinite Light. A slope to the right of the gate leads to Seolbeopjeon. Here, a statue of Shakyamuni resides. Behind it are 1000 seated Buddha statues.

Seolbeopjeon hosts temple stay participants. They meditate, prostrate, and sleep here. The path behind the main hall goes past monks’ living quarters. It also leads to meditation buildings. Signs remind visitors to remain quiet. The monks need to focus on their studies. Gilsang-sa operates a Buddhist college. It also has a Zen meditation center.

The temple actively helps the local community. It raises funds for the disabled. Gilsang-sa supports hungry children worldwide. It aids poor children. North Korean refugees also receive assistance.

Gilsangsa Temple offers programs for Koreans and foreigners. These include Buddhist education. Meditation classes are also popular. Short temple stays provide immersive experiences. The temple stay program is available on the fourth weekend of every month.

Gilsang-sa is known for its harmony with nature. The grounds offer stunning views and a peaceful environment. The Gilsang Seonwon, or Zen Center, is dedicated to meditation practice. Another meditation room, the House of Silence, is open daily.

Notice how Gilsang-sa retains features of the original restaurant. This is unusual for Korean Buddhist temples. The blend of past and present creates a unique atmosphere. It is a testament to the temple’s unique history. Gilsang-sa is a place of reflection, community, and spiritual growth.
