The Gilbert Charles Bourne Obelisk marks the spot to remember him. The inscription reads: “This stone is placed here by his friends in memory of Gilbert Charles Bourne F.R.S. 1861–1933. A devoted friend of Oxford Rowing.” The Latin phrase “Fac pro viribus” means “Act according to your strength”. Or “with all your strength”.

Gilbert Charles Bourne was born in Worcestershire in 1861. He lived until 1933. He studied at New College Oxford. Bourne rowed for Oxford in the Boat Race in 1882 and 1883.

Bourne wasn’t only an athlete. He directed the Marine Biological Laboratory in Plymouth. He then became a Fellow and Tutor at New College Oxford. He was also a soldier. He served in the South African War.

From 1906 to 1921 Bourne was Linacre Professor of Zoology. In 1910 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. During the First World War, he was wounded at Sulva Bay in 1915.

Bourne dedicated much of his life to rowing. He coached rowing eights. In 1925 he wrote “A Text Book on Oarsmanship”. This book showed his deep understanding of the sport.

He passed away at his home near Abingdon. Yet, his legacy lives on through this obelisk. The Gilbert Charles Bourne Obelisk stands as a symbol.
