Gazing upon Giáo xứ Bình Hòa, can you sense the echoes of its vibrant past? This unassuming church holds within its walls a story of resilience, growth, and unwavering faith. It’s a tale woven into the very fabric of Ho Chi Minh City. Giáo xứ Bình Hòa officially came into being on August 15, 1968. Archbishop Paul Nguyễn Văn Bình presided over the momentous occasion, appointing Father Đaminh Hoàng Duy Thanh as the first pastor. The church adopted Archbishop Paul as its patron. In the beginning, Giáo xứ Bình Hòa was humble. A small group of parishioners, displaced from Lái Thiêu, built a simple structure. It was made of a borrowed wooden frame and some sheet metal. Imagine their dedication, constructing a sacred space from such modest materials. By 1978, with the support of the Archdiocese and the guidance of Father Giacôbê Huỳnh Văn Của, the first proper church building was erected. This marked a significant step forward for Giáo xứ Bình Hòa. Fast forward to 1985. Father Thanh retired, and Father Tôma Phan Minh Chánh, from Lái Thiêu, took the helm. Sadly, the original structure, weakened by war and time, collapsed in 1987. Father Chánh relocated the congregation, establishing a temporary home at the current site. Giáo xứ Bình Hòa continued to evolve under the leadership of Father Micae Nguyễn Văn Minh in 1988 and then Father Phêrô Lê Văn Ngọc from 1989 to 1996. During this period, seminarian Phêrô Phan Văn Tài also served the parish. In 1996, Father Titô Nguyễn Minh Nhường became the new leader. He oversaw the renovation of the existing structure in 1997, which was by then being used as the local kindergarten. By April 1999, a second, larger church building was added to the complex, expanding the capacity of Giáo xứ Bình Hòa to serve its growing community. Two seminarians, Phanxicô Xaviê Nguyễn Thế Vinh and Phaolô Nguyễn Quốc Cường, were assigned to the parish in December 1997, further strengthening its spiritual foundation. Father Nhường handed over the reins to Father Phaolô Phạm Quốc Tuấn in August 1999. Father Tuấn renovated the old kitchen, transforming it into a more suitable space for the parish priest’s residence and office. The development continued. In 2001, shrines to the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph were completed. Then, in 2002-2003, statues of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Saint Joseph were erected within the church grounds. Giáo xứ Bình Hòa stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
