The imposing church stands before you. Its tall steeple pierces the sky. This is Giáo xứ An Lạc a place of profound history and unwavering faith.

In 1954 Father Gioan Baotixita Tran Ngu Nhac led a group of Catholic refugees from North Vietnam. They sought refuge in a secluded area of Phu Tho district. This area is now home to the Trung Vuong Hospital and Bach Khoa University. They called this temporary settlement the Phu Tho Lieu camp. The community built a simple church using readily available materials. It served as a temporary house of worship.

By the end of 1956 the Phu Tho Lieu camp was disbanded. The community moved. They needed to find a permanent location. Father Gioan Baotixita sought land near the city. He sought land to support his growing congregation. He found a plot in Tan Son Hoa ward. This land belonged to Mr Nguyen Van Them. It was then undeveloped and overgrown. Many Catholic families bought land there creating a new settlement. They called it the Ha Noi camp.

In late 1956 the community started construction of their first proper church. Father Gioan Baotixita and Father Pho Vu Khiem Cung worked together. They used salvaged materials from Phu Tho Lieu. They built a modest structure of wood and thatch.

On January 1 1957 Giáo xứ An Lạc was officially established. Father Gioan Baotixita Tran Ngu Nhac became its first parish priest. An Lạc means peaceful and prosperous. This reflected the community’s hope for a stable and prosperous life. The initial congregation numbered over a thousand.

Over time the church grew. In 1959 renovations began. The church was expanded with brick walls and a new roof. A tall cross was erected at the church’s peak. By this time the parish had grown to over four thousand. Two new chapels were also built Xuan An and Tan An.

Through the years many priests served Giáo xứ An Lạc. Each contributed to its growth and development. New buildings were erected including a school. The church played a vital role in the community. It served as a center for education religious instruction and social gatherings.

In 1972 a new church was constructed. It was a grand structure built of concrete and brick. The current church stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the community. It reflects their continuous devotion. Its towering steeple serves as a beacon of hope.

The Giáo xứ An Lạc continues to serve its parishioners. It remains a center of spiritual life in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Its history is a rich tapestry woven with faith perseverance and unwavering devotion. It’s a living testament to a resilient community. A community that has overcome hardships through faith and devotion.
