Who was this brilliant mind whose statue stands before us? This is the Giáo sư Lê Văn Thiêm Statue at Hanoi University of Education. It’s more than just a monument. It represents a pivotal figure in Vietnamese mathematics. A man whose contributions shaped the nation’s academic landscape.

Le Van Thiem wasn’t just any mathematician. He was Vietnam’s first Doctor of Mathematical Sciences. He laid the groundwork for the development and growth of mathematics in Vietnam. He achieved this remarkable feat in a time of war and considerable hardship. Imagine the dedication required. The sheer perseverance to pursue advanced studies abroad during wartime. To return and build a national institution from the ground up.

His journey began humbly. He was born into a family with a strong tradition of scholarship in Ha Tinh Province. His early education laid a foundation for his remarkable achievements. He excelled. He completed his nine-year program at the prestigious College de Quinhon in just four years. His professor Michel Casimir famously remarked “He will go further than I!” This prediction proved strikingly accurate.

Le Van Thiem’s academic journey took him to France. There he pursued his Doctorate at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He obtained his Doctorate in 1944. His thesis focused on complex function theory. This was an area of mathematics he dedicated much of his life to. He made significant original contributions to the field. This earned him international recognition.

After completing his doctorate Le Van Thiem returned to Vietnam. This was a time of national struggle and rebuilding. He answered Ho Chi Minh’s call to participate in the resistance against the French. He served in the education sector in South Vietnam until the government called him back to North Vietnam. There he played a crucial role in establishing educational institutions.

He was appointed as the first principal of the University of Science. He also became principal of the Hanoi Higher Pedagogical School. Simultaneously he lectured in advanced mathematics at these institutions. This speaks volumes about his leadership abilities and commitment to education. He was just 33 years old at the time. He truly was a remarkable individual.

Le Van Thiem’s contributions extended beyond establishing institutions. He played a key role in building up Vietnam’s mathematical community. He became the first president of the Vietnam Mathematical Society in 1966. Nine years later he became the first director of the Institute of Mathematics. His leadership was instrumental in fostering collaboration between Vietnamese mathematicians and their global counterparts.

This statue before us honors a man who exemplified dedication. He dedicated his life to building a strong foundation for Vietnamese mathematics. He left behind a lasting legacy. A legacy visible in the impressive achievements of Vietnamese mathematicians today. Let’s remember this man. Remember his unwavering commitment to his nation’s intellectual growth. Remember his groundbreaking contributions to the field of mathematics. The Giáo sư Lê Văn Thiêm Statue serves as a powerful reminder of his life’s work. A work that continues to inspire future generations.
