Are Giant Tortoises really as giant as everyone says? Here at L’Union Estate on La Digue Island, you’ll find out for yourself. The Giant Tortoises here are a sight to behold. These gentle giants, native to the Aldabra Atoll, have found a welcome home here. While the endemic species of La Digue is sadly extinct, these Aldabra cousins help keep the legacy of giant tortoises alive on the island. You might be surprised to learn that these tortoises are actually considered vulnerable. Overfarming for food in the past drastically reduced their numbers. Thankfully, Seychelles stepped in and protected them under the Wild Animals and Birds Protection Act in 1974. Seeing them lumbering about, it’s hard to imagine these creatures facing any threat. Some of the males, like the famed Brutus and Patrick, are incredibly large. Imagine sharing an island with such ancient and gentle giants. They are a true testament to conservation efforts and a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of Seychelles.
