In December 2012, tragedy struck Commonwealth Avenue. A vibrant young man, Christopher Weigl, a Boston University graduate student, was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer while cycling to his photojournalism class. He was just 23 years old. The Ghost bike – Christopher Weigl stands here as a stark reminder of this loss. It is a white bicycle, placed near the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and St. Paul Street, the very spot where Christopher’s life was tragically cut short. Ghost bikes serve as memorials, but also as calls to action for safer streets. This Ghost bike – Christopher Weigl represents not only grief, but also the tremendous advocacy that followed Christopher’s death. This advocacy ultimately led to the transformation of Commonwealth Avenue. Before the accident, there were no protected bike lanes. Now, cycle tracks offer cyclists a cement buffer from traffic and parked cars. This change wouldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of individuals and groups, including Christopher’s brother, Dustin, and the organization MassBike. They pushed for safer infrastructure, recognizing that the tragedy of Christopher’s death could have been prevented. The Ghost bike – Christopher Weigl stands as a symbol of loss, but also of hope. It reminds us of the importance of advocating for safer streets for all, so that no more lives are needlessly lost. It is a tribute to a young man with a passion for photojournalism, whose life was tragically cut short, but whose legacy continues to inspire change.
