Lost in the urban jungle of Mumbai lies a secret, a tranquil escape known as Ghatkopar Hill. Ghatkopar, meaning “on top of the hill,” is a fitting name for this hidden gem. Ghatkopar Hill offers a refreshing break from the city’s hustle. This hill, sometimes referred to as the Ghatkopar firing range or police firing hill, isn’t well-known, even to locals. Before it was a firing range, Ghatkopar in the 1920s was a quiet village surrounded by creeks and salt pans. It became part of Greater Bombay in 1945. The names of the roads in Ghatkopar offer a glimpse into its past. You’ll find Nowrojee Lane, named for Nowrojee Sheth, and Cama Lane, a tribute to Lady Cama. There’s even Hingwala Lane, named after a family who dealt in asafoetida. Today, the hill, with its mixed evergreen woods, rises above the bustling streets. The best way to reach Ghatkopar Hill is to head towards Sant Muktabai General Hospital in Ghatkopar West. From there, locals can direct you to the fire station at the base of the hill. The climb begins on a small path to your left as you face the hill. The first part of the ascent is steep, requiring a bit of a scramble. But don’t worry, the view from the top is worth the effort. After the initial climb, the path levels out, offering a pleasant walk for about 45 minutes. The summit features a proposed helipad for police personnel, offering panoramic views of the city. The descent is equally rewarding, especially if you take the right path at the split, which leads back to the fire station. The final portion is steep, but manageable. Though a short hike, the climb offers a unique perspective of Mumbai, a hidden oasis of green amid the urban sprawl. Ghatkopar Hill reminds us that even in the busiest of cities, pockets of nature and tranquility await those who seek them out.
