Can you imagine a university evolving from a college? That’s the story of Ghana Communication Technology University. Right here in Tesano, Accra, stands GCTU. It’s a public university, officially established in 2006, although its roots go back to 2005. GCTU wasn’t always a university. It began as the Ghana Telecom University College and later became the Ghana Technology University College. Finally, in June 2020, it achieved university status with the passing of the Ghana Communication Technology University Bill. GCTU offers bachelor’s and graduate programs. These focus on Computing, Engineering, and Information and Communications Technologies. They also provide certificate programs and professional development workshops. GCTU opened its School of Business in January 2009. It offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Business and Entrepreneurship. They also offer a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Technology. The university has grown significantly. From an initial 350 students in 2006, enrollment reached about 7,000 by 2017. While the main campus is here in Tesano, Accra, GCTU has expanded. They have another campus in nearby Abeka, a satellite campus in Nungua, and additional campuses in Kumasi, Takoradi, Koforidua, and Ho. GCTU emphasizes partnerships with institutions like Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology in Ghana and Coventry University in the UK. They also collaborate with universities in Kenya, the US, Denmark, South Korea, and Germany. This global network enhances the learning experience. GCTU is governed by a nine-member University Council. This council includes educators, business executives, and government officials. It was inaugurated on August 23, 2010. GCTU strives to be a leader in technology-oriented education and a globally recognized center of research. It’s a place where knowledge knows no boundaries. GCTU shapes students into successful professionals in telecommunications, business, and ICT.
