In 1960, the 2 Infantry Brigade Group Headquarters was formed. It came from units deployed to ONUC in the Congo. In 1962, the 2 Infantry Brigade Group was formally established in Kumasi. Brigadier NA Aferi was the first Ghanaian brigade commander.

The Headquarters moved to Idris Barracks. This was originally the European Hospital in Kumasi. The camp is named after WO1 Idris.

The Brigade’s logo has crossed spears. It passes through an African head-pad. The inscription reads “Through Our Carriers We Fight”. The motto recognizes the auxiliary groups’ role in Burma. They carried heavy loads. This enabled the Brigade to move through dense terrain.

In 2000, the formation became Northern Command. Maj Gen HK Anyidoho was the first GOC. The Command includes infantry battalions. There is also an Armoured Recce Squadron. Support arms and services are located in Kumasi.
