How about we step into the world of green growth right here in Seoul? This is the Global Green Growth Institute or GGGI. It is an intergovernmental organization. GGGI works to help developing countries grow in a sustainable way.
GGGI helps countries develop green growth plans. These plans focus on energy, water, and land use. The organization also works on creating sustainable urban environments. These are often called green cities. GGGI’s work ensures that economic progress goes hand in hand with environmental care.
The Global Green Growth Institute started as a think tank in 2010. Lee Myung-bak, who was then the President of South Korea, started it. In 2012, GGGI became an international organization. This change was made official at the Rio+20 Summit in Brazil.

In October 2024, GGGI and the Mitsubishi Research Institute signed an agreement. They will work together to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement.
In November 2024, four South Korean universities announced a joint Sustainable Campus Initiative at GGGI headquarters. These universities want to build eco-friendly campuses. They also want to lead in sustainability in Korean education.
In August 2024, GGGI appointed Sang-Hyup Kim as its new Director-General. Kim is a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. His term will run from 2025 to 2028.
Also in August 2024, the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development and GGGI co-hosted the 2024 SDGs Youth Summer Camp. This event brought global youth leaders together to address the plastic pollution crisis.
In March 2024, the Republic of Korea and GGGI signed an agreement for USD 13.5 million. This money will help speed up green growth.
