Tucked away in Berlin’s Nikolaiviertel, two weathered figures stand sentinel. These are the Gewändefiguren Sculptures. They bear silent witness to a tumultuous past, whispering stories of a forgotten king and a city divided. The Gewändefiguren, originally part of a grand equestrian statue of Frederick William III, once graced the Lustgarten. This larger monument, unveiled in 1871, featured six figures in all its glory. Sadly, the ravages of World War II decimated this majestic ensemble. Only two figures survived the onslaught. These are the Gewändefiguren. They were remarkably unscathed and stand before you today. In 1987, these 3-meter-tall bronze figures found a new home in the Nikolaiviertel. Their presence adds a touch of historical depth to this reconstructed neighborhood. One of the Gewändefiguren represents Clio, the Muse of History. Her left hand once rested on the monument’s base, while her right hand was poised as if writing. She embodies the act of recording events, a silent scribe of time. The other figure is an allegory of Science. This pensive male figure holds a weighty book in his right hand, bracing it against his thigh. In his left hand, he cradles a globe, symbolizing the all-encompassing nature of knowledge. These figures offer a glimpse into the artistic sensibilities of their creator, Albert Wolff. He lived from 1814 to 1897 and left an enduring mark on Berlin’s artistic landscape. The Gewändefiguren, though mere remnants of a larger composition, now possess a poignant power of their own. They serve as a stark reminder of the destructive forces of war and the resilience of art. Take a moment to appreciate these sculptures, not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the stories they silently tell. They are fragments of history, brought to life once more in the heart of Berlin.
