In 1395, amidst the nascent Joseon dynasty, Geunjeongmun Gate was erected. It served as the majestic southern entrance to Geunjeongjeon, the main hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The gate’s history, however, is marked by both creation and destruction. The original Geunjeongmun Gate, built alongside the palace itself, fell victim to the flames during the Japanese Invasion of 1592. What we see today at Geunjeongmun Gate is a testament to resilience. It was resurrected in 1867 during the extensive restoration of Gyeongbokgung Palace under the reign of King Gojong. This two-story marvel showcases the architectural brilliance of the late Joseon period. Geunjeongmun Gate is not just a gate. It stands as a vital piece of Joseon Dynasty history. It offers invaluable insights into the palace architecture of that era. The gate features a distinctive hip roof known as ujingakjibung. This roof presents a trapezoidal silhouette when viewed head-on. Look closely at the gongpo, the brackets supporting the eaves. Notice they are positioned not only on the pillars but also between them. This dapo style is a hallmark of late Joseon architecture. The sharply shaped materials extend outwards, creating a pronounced curve. Geunjeongmun Gate holds a unique distinction among the south gates of Joseon’s main palace buildings. It is the only one to boast two stories. It stands as a proud reminder of the dynasty’s architectural prowess. Imagine the grand ceremonies that unfolded at Geunjeongmun Gate. Picture the king passing through its central aisle, the sole individual permitted to do so. The gate bore witness to pivotal moments in Joseon history, including coronations and audiences with officials. The gate played a significant role in palace life, serving as a stage for both small audiences and grand national events.
