A bronze bust, captured in time, stands before us. This is the Getrude Langer O.B.E. Ph.D. Sculpture, a tribute to one of Brisbane’s most influential figures in the arts. Dr. Gertrude Langer, an Austrian-born art critic, arrived in Brisbane in 1939 after fleeing Europe during World War II. Her passion for the arts and her sharp intellect quickly made her a leading voice in the local scene. She wrote for The Courier-Mail for over 30 years, sharing her knowledge of art history and advocating for contemporary Australian artists. Dr. Langer’s dedication didn’t stop there. She played a key role in establishing the Queensland division of the Arts Council of Australia, served as its president for 14 years, and became the first fellow of the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation. Her contributions were recognized with an Order of the British Empire in 1968. The Getrude Langer O.B.E. Ph.D. Sculpture, created by Kathleen Shillam, is a testament to her lasting impact on the artistic landscape of Brisbane.
