Fifty years of learning laughter and legacy. That’s the Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule. Right here in the heart of Hamburg-Altona this school stands. It wasn’t always known as the Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule. Until June 2010 it was the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule. A child of the 1970s it was born from two schools. The Haupt- and Realschule Böttcherkamp and the Gymnasium Glückstädter Weg merged. It became a Gesamtschule a school type seen as the future back then. The school is part of a new neighborhood. Social housing is dense there. It blends into an area with many single and two-family homes.
The Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule has a rich history. In 1988 it established its first integration class. A year later during a project week the school adopted its current name. This name honors the Geschwister Scholl Hans and Sophie who bravely resisted the Nazi regime. In 2004 the school celebrated its 25th anniversary. The building itself was already thirty years old.
Time wore on. The building showed its age. But the school spirit remained strong. Parents students and teachers worked tirelessly. They renovated the school bit by bit. The entrance area with its cafeteria and internet cafe was completely redesigned in 2004. The school even reopened its upper secondary level in 2011. It shares this with the Stadtteilschule Lurup.
For years talk of renovations continued. Then in early 2014 the decision was made a new building would be constructed. The Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule even won a national competition. It was the Montagsstiftung’s “Schools Plan and Build” contest. This victory meant collaboration with top experts in educational architecture. Parents students teachers local stakeholders Schulbau Hamburg and the education authority all worked together. The Montagsstiftung guided the process. The new building’s design perfectly blends educational vision and the right atmosphere for learning. The result is architectural excellence.
The new Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule opened in autumn 2021. It is a testament to a community’s dedication and its commitment to education. This school is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living legacy. A place where generations of students have learned grown and contributed to Hamburg’s vibrant fabric. The Geschwister-Scholl-Stadtteilschule is a success story in the making.
