Engraved in stone are tales of Wandsbek’s past. This is the Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele. It stands as a memorial. It recounts the area’s history. The Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele marks a journey through time. It offers glimpses into significant events. It acts as a reminder of Wandsbek’s evolution.
This stone’s story is quite interesting. It began in 1937. Wandsbek’s city administration erected it. This occurred during Wandsbek’s unification with Hamburg. It was placed at the edge of the marketplace. This marketplace no longer exists.
However, the Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele’s initial purpose is controversial. It featured historical data. Some facts were incorrect. It also included a thank you to the “Führer”. After the war, these elements were removed. They were chiseled away. The changes were not comprehensive.
Over time, the Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele has been moved. It stood near Wandsbeker Marktstraße. This was its original location. The construction of the Wandsbek bus station forced a relocation. It then stood at the entrance of a park. Later it was moved in front of the church for a few years. In 2005, it was moved again. This was during a redesign of the square. It now stands before the church and the Schimmelmann Mausoleum.
The Wandsbeker Geschichtsstein isn’t the only landmark here. Before it stood a sandstone vase. It came from the Schlosspark. The vase was relocated. It now stands on the south side of Wandsbeker Marktplatz.
The Wandsbeker Geschichtsstein marks the entrance to Wandsbeker Gehölz. This park offers more historical markers. Here lies a memorial stone for Matthias Claudius. It was erected in 1840. This commemorated the poet’s 100th birthday. The stone bears emblems of the “Wandsbeker Bote” newspaper. It has been protected since 1943. A war memorial for World War I fallen stands nearby.
A statue of a Roman warrior once stood here. Now it resides in the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte. It was moved for conservation reasons.
The Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele, therefore, serves as more than a marker. It is a focal point. It encourages reflection. It links the past and present. It connects to other historical elements nearby. The Geschichtsstein Wandsbek Stele encapsulates the layered history of Wandsbek. It invites us to consider the forces. They shaped this region.
