What if I told you that within these walls, a haven for book lovers and learners was reborn? I am talking about Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek. This isn’t just a library. It’s a community hub, a place where stories come alive.
The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek, nestled in the heart of Gropiusstadt, has been a vital part of this community. It temporarily closed its doors in April 2024 for extensive modernization. But it reopened in February 2025. The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek now boasts a fresh new look.
Imagine new flooring. Picture vibrant wall colors. Envision modern furniture designed to make everyone feel at home. The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek is more than just a pretty space. It is a place to foster learning and exploration.
The renovation of the Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek cost around 300,000 euros. This investment came from the Berlin Senate. The money supported the improvement of public libraries.
A key focus was expanding the children’s and family area within the Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek. The library also features the Smint program. Smint stands for “Smart mit Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaft und Technik”. This program introduces young children to science and technology.
But that’s not all. The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek also saw the opening of the Trude-Jugend-Bib. This is Neukölln’s first independent youth library. The Trude-Jugend-Bib offers workshops and learning spaces. It is a place for young people to explore their interests outside of school.
The Trude-Jugend-Bib even collaborates with the Institut für Medienpädagogik. Together, they develop programs focused on media literacy. The Trude-Jugend-Bib also addresses important topics such as climate protection.
The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek celebrated its reopening with a special event. There was food and drinks in the community center’s courtyard. Live music filled the air. Visitors explored the renovated spaces. They borrowed books and other media. Children enjoyed special programs designed just for them.
The Stadtteilmütter provided a buffet in the Trude-Jugend-Bib. The Institut für Medienpädagogik offered interactive activities. Lerncoaches introduced themselves to the young people. The AWO Digital Café team was also there. They help seniors navigate the internet and smartphones. They offer support in Turkish and Arabic.
The Gertrud-Junge-Bibliothek is open Mondays and Fridays from 11 AM to 3 PM. It is also open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 PM to 7 PM. The Trude-Jugend-Bib welcomes visitors Tuesdays through Thursdays from 2 PM to 7 PM.
