On a crisp autumn day in 1925, a young George Gershwin, fresh off his Parisian adventure and brimming with melodies, brought his family to 316 West 103rd Street. The Gershwin House. This elegant townhouse, nestled in a then-affluent neighborhood, became the vibrant heart of a musical revolution. The Gershwin House wasn’t just a home; it was a creative cauldron. George, the rising star, claimed the top floor as his studio, office, and living space. Two grand pianos were hauled up the stairs, ready to translate the sounds of Paris into American jazz. The rest of the family, Rose, Morris, Arthur, Frances, and Ira, filled the other floors, creating a bustling, loving, and slightly chaotic atmosphere. Imagine Rose’s kitchen, filled with the aroma of borscht, while upstairs, George hammered out the infectious tunes of “Oh, Kay!” Ira, perhaps on the fourth floor with his new wife, Leonore, crafted the witty lyrics that would become synonymous with the Gershwin name. The Gershwin House witnessed an explosion of creativity. Within its walls, “An American in Paris” took shape, inspired by George’s recent trip. “Funny Face” and “Strike Up the Band” were also born here, filling the house with music, laughter, and the occasional creative disagreement. Although their time at the Gershwin House was short-lived, ending in 1929 with the brothers’ move to Riverside Drive, the impact of those years reverberates through music history. Think of those iconic melodies, those unforgettable lyrics, and remember that they were first heard within these walls. The Gershwin House. A testament to the power of family, the magic of collaboration, and the birth of some of America’s most beloved music.
