Step back in time and imagine yourself in the German Colony in Haifa. It’s 1868, and a group of German Templers, deeply religious Protestants, have arrived in this ancient land with a dream of building a new life in the Holy Land. They believed their settlement would hasten the Second Coming of Christ. Looking around, you can see the fruits of their labor: neat rows of stone houses lining Ben-Gurion Boulevard, the main street, which runs from north to south and is lined with shade trees. The houses were designed by the architect Jacob Shumacher and boast beautiful red-shingled roofs. The German Colony was built on a grid plan, a revolutionary concept in Palestine at the time. The Templers brought modern urban planning principles, introducing new industries like transportation, and even organized regular services between Jaffa, Acre, and Nazareth. They were pioneers in Palestine, a land long neglected by the Ottomans. In 1874, a schism occurred within the Templer denomination, with some joining the Evangelical State Church of Prussia. This divided the colony into two groups, both with their own congregations, schools, and community centers. Despite the rivalry, both groups were pioneers in bringing modernity to Palestine, with their advancements in agriculture, healthcare, and education. Today, you can still see reminders of their past in the colony’s charming cafes, boutiques, and restaurants, housed within those original restored Templer homes. The German Colony, a fascinating mixture of history, culture, and modernity, is a hidden gem, reminding us of the enduring legacy of the Templers who transformed this corner of Palestine into a vibrant and bustling community.
