Gereja Kerahiman Ilahi or the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy is the youngest parish in Batam. It’s nestled under the authority of the Pangkal Pinang Diocese. Before becoming a parish it was St Joseph’s Station. That was part of the Santo Petrus Lubuk Baja Parish. On March 30 2008 it officially became a parish. Bishop Hilarius Moa Nurak SVD presided over the mass. Father Ludgerus Lusi Oke was appointed the first parish priest.
The name Gereja Kerahiman Ilahi means Church of Divine Mercy. Its English name is Catholic Church of Divine Mercy. This isn’t just a name it’s a reflection of the church’s mission. A mission to spread God’s love and mercy.
That impressive gong you see near the altar? It doesn’t play music. It signals the elevation of the Body and Blood of Christ. It’s a reminder to focus on the sacred moment. Not to look down.
The tabernacle holds the Blessed Sacrament. The Body of Christ. When the tabernacle light is on Christ is present. This calls for reverence. A bow or a kneel is customary when passing.
The choir area is vibrant. It’s where the choir guides the congregation in song. This adds to the spiritual atmosphere.
The sacristy is where priests and altar servers prepare for Mass. It’s a place of quiet preparation. A space for reflection.
The church also features a multi-purpose hall. It’s used for meetings and Sunday school. Nearby is a shop selling Catholic items such as Bibles and rosaries. It’s a place for community engagement.
There’s a chapel too. It was founded by Mgr. Hillarius Moa Nurak SVD. Inside are relics of St. Faustina Kowalska and St. Pope John Paul II. This adds a unique layer to the church’s character.
