Is it possible for a church to be born out of disagreement? Gereja GKPI stands as a testament to this very phenomenon. It is a beacon of faith and a symbol of resilience in Batam.

Gereja GKPI, or Gereja Kristen Protestan Indonesia, emerged from a spiritual reform within the Batak Protestant Christian Church. This reform led to a split due to leadership disagreements. Established in 1964, its early years were marked by hardship.

Initially isolated, Gereja GKPI lacked local and international connections. The church overcame these challenges, experiencing membership growth. A turning point arrived in 1977, with its inclusion in the Lutheran World Federation and the United Evangelical Mission.

GKPI transformed into a national church with a wide reach. It spread across Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. The majority of its members belong to the Toba-Batak ethnic group. The church’s geographical heartland remains in North Sumatra.

More than 75% of the members are small farmers in villages and rural areas. Others work in government service, the military, or as shopkeepers. Many belong to low-income groups facing challenges in improving their lives.

Gereja GKPI operates with three key departments. These focus on witness, general organization, and finance. They oversee programs encompassing evangelization and training. Sunday school, research, youth, women’s and men’s initiatives are also included.

The church supports several foundations. These include organizations for the blind and for general education. The Mamre Orphanage and the Agape Foundation also benefit. Congregations provide financial support to sustain this work. They are responsible for their parish pastor’s salary. The United Evangelical Mission also supports certain programs.

GKPI embraces the partnership model promoted by the UE. It fosters understanding of each other’s circumstances and needs. Churches learn together to implement Jesus Christ’s mission. This collaboration allows churches to effectively carry out their ministry.

Training pastors, elders, and church leaders is a priority for the Gereja GKPI. The goal is to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skills. It also aims to enhance their leadership abilities. The church encourages pastors to pursue postgraduate studies. GKPI is planning a cooperative budgeting system. It will support local fundraising and financial self-reliance.

Gereja GKPI joined the Lutheran World Federation in 1975. Today, the church counts over 274,000 members. Gereja GKPI stands as a testament to faith’s ability to thrive. It is a place where community bonds are strengthened. It is a place where the spirit of service is kindled. It is a place where the word of God is heard.
