Early days were tough. The church lacked connections both locally and internationally. But persistence paid off. In 1977 the Gereja Gkpi joined the Lutheran World Federation and the United Evangelical Mission. This boosted membership and broke the initial isolation.
The Gereja Gkpi isn’t confined to Batam. It’s a national church. You’ll find its presence across Sumatra Java and Kalimantan. Most members though are from the Toba-Batak ethnic group. Their concentration is in North Sumatra. Many are small farmers. Others work in government the military or run small businesses. A significant portion belong to a low-income group.
The Gereja Gkpi is organized into three departments: witness general organization and finance. These oversee various programs. Evangelization training Sunday school youth groups and women’s ministries are just a few examples. The church also supports foundations for the blind an orphanage and others focused on general education. Congregations support their own pastors’ salaries. Some programs receive aid from the United Evangelical Mission.
